Decision making using siloed data and analysis misses potential insights that could be obtained through combining operational system data. While most Utilities are analyzing portions of their data, they are not bringing together the most impactful data sources like: ADMS, OMS, AMI, GIS, SCADA, etc. By combing and analyzing data sources to recreate the physical flow of power through the grid, Utilities can:
- Reduce overloads
- Improve Circuit Performance
- Increase available Capacity
- Improve Reliability Metrics
There is significant value to be realized in analyzing combined operational data, including:
- Identifying potential circuit overloads, capacity issues, and circuit performance
- Reduced truck rolls for unscheduled maintenance
- Anticipating circuit challenges
- Enhancing regular equipment maintenance schedules
- Increasing worker safety
During the session we’ll show how volumes of data can be combined, distilled, and analyzed to provide real-world insights to drive operational reliability.

SAS
Tom Anderson is an Advisory Systems Engineer with the SAS US Energy Division. His 25+ years of analytical experience includes 20 years with SAS with a focus on advanced analytics and data management in both Utilities and Oil and Gas. Recent achievements with solutions in Asset Performance Analytics including multiple patents in distribution forecasting and asset failure.
Sacha Fontaine
Head of Utility AI Strategy & Innovation
SAS
Sacha works with utilities and SAS data scientists to apply analytics to the issues facing utilities. One aspect of his work involves bringing together the experience of utilities, the guidance and funding of the Department of Energy, the research strength of academia and the analytics expertise of SAS to address some of the grid’s toughest problems, such as low grid inertia. His team works with clients in using analytics to improve grid reliability and customer visibility, and to ease the shift to green energy.
Prior to joining SAS, Sacha spent more than 20 years with utilities working with such industry giants as Duke Energy, GE, Deloitte, Siemens and Hydro Quebec on the infrastructure for electric vehicles and renewables, IoT for utilities, and advanced distribution management system (ADMS) projects. Sacha holds a bachelor’s in computer and electrical engineering from McGill University and is an avid skier and scuba diver.
