Session Title:From Detection to Decision: How AI and Climate Data Are Transforming Safety in Extreme Conditions

Session Description:

As extreme weather events become more frequent and more severe, utilities are facing a critical safety challenge: how to move from simply detecting risk to making timely, informed decisions that protect both field crews and critical infrastructure.

This session brings together two closely connected areas of focus—AI-enabled visual detection and climate-driven risk assessment—to tell a more complete and practical story of safety analytics in action.

Utilities are increasingly leveraging technologies such as computer vision, AI-enabled cameras, and drones to detect early signs of wildfire ignition, vegetation encroachment, and other emerging threats. At the same time, organizations are using weather data, asset intelligence, and predictive analytics to assess risk levels and determine when conditions become too dangerous for crews to continue working.

Individually, these capabilities are powerful. Together, they enable a more proactive and coordinated approach to safety.

This session will explore how utilities are:
• Gaining earlier visibility into potential hazards through visual AI and real-time monitoring
• Integrating multiple data sources to assess risk across assets, environments, and field operations
• Establishing thresholds and decision frameworks for when to pause or stop work due to extreme conditions
• Balancing safety, reliability, and operational pressures in high-risk scenarios

Rather than focusing on tools alone, this discussion will emphasize real-world utility experience, lessons learned, and how organizations are translating data into actionable decisions.

Join this session to hear how utilities are connecting detection to decision-making—advancing safety analytics from awareness to action in an increasingly volatile environment.

Speaker: Avideh Razavi, Director of Asset Risk & Strategy Management – SoCalGas
