Session Description:

As medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) fleets pivot toward electrification, utilities face a critical visibility gap: highly localized, high-impact load that traditional planning models struggle to capture. Understanding the “where, when, and how” of fleet charging is no longer optional—it is essential for grid reliability and proactive customer service. This session explores bottom-up, data-driven methodologies to better anticipate fleet customer needs. We will cover two complementary approaches:

• Grid-Aware Fleet Planning: How grid capacity data can enable spatio-temporal optimization that helps align electrification decisions between fleets and utilities — reducing infrastructure bottlenecks and improving deployment timing.
• Large-Scale Telematics Analytics: How large-scale telematics data can provide deeper visibility into vehicle usage patterns, and enable inference of when fleets will electrify, where they will charge, and at what scale — grounded in their actual cost-benefit realities.

Together, these approaches offer a more granular and actionable view of customer behavior, infrastructure needs, and system impacts compared to traditional top-down forecasting methods. The session will share practical methodologies, real-world applications, and lessons learned from working at the intersection of fleet operations and utility planning.
