Comments on Kentucky Utilities d/b/a Old Dominion Power Company’s (KU-ODP) June application for certificates of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) for structure replacements on three 161-kV transmission lines within the company’s existing rights of way (ROWs) in Lee and Wise counties in Virginia are due by Sept. 21, the Virginia State Corporation Commission said in a July 2 order.
As reported, in its filing, which is dated June 2, the company said that it proposes to remove and replace:
- 27 wood structures, as well as repair six structures, on the Dorchester to Arnold line — 14.4 miles — at an estimated cost of $3.2m
- 89 wood structures, as well as repair 22 structures, on the Dorchester to Pocket North line — 25.6 miles — at an estimated cost of $10.7m
- Five wood structures, as well as repair three structures, on the Harlan Wye to Pocket North line — 5.2 miles — at an estimated cost of $0.9m
The structure replacements are required to ensure the longevity of the company’s transmission infrastructure, as well as to ensure the company is equipped to comply with its mandate to provide reliable electric service to its Virginia customers, KU-ODP said.
The company also said that subject to the commission’s issuance of a certificate of public convenience and necessity, it plans to complete the structure replacements and put them into service beginning in July 2021, and ending by October 2022.
The commission, in its order, said that any interested person or entity may file with its clerk a request by Aug. 24 that the commission convene a hearing on the company’s application.
The commission said that its staff is to file with the clerk by Sept. 30 a report containing recommendations on the application. The company may file with the clerk by Oct. 14 any response to the staff report, the commission said.
