In this webinar we will provide an update on ComEd’s progress in implementing their Advanced Image Analytics program, which is leveraging new technologies to build a more effective and proactive maintenance program. By combining drone powerline inspection with computer vision AI image processing, ComEd is empowering their workforce to more rapidly and effectively identify and repair asset defect conditions before they are service impacting.
This webinar examines how ComEd implemented and is progressing in each of the program elements consisting of 1) Standardized Visual Data Collection 2) Visual Data Management 3) Image Analytics and Management, 4) AI Algorithm Development and Deployment, 5) AI Model Retraining and Enhancement 6) New Digital Data Applications and Leverage.
The second portion of the webinar will present new use cases in development with other utilities, including demonstrations of utilizing satellite imagery with AI analytics for identifying and prioritizing storm response actions, using LiDAR data with AI analysis for vegetation management program optimization, and powerline inspection program automation using drone data capture and AI analysis.

Jeff Birkmeier is Sr. Utility Industry Specialist at Optelos, where he applies his 30+ years of utility industry leadership experience to help develop Optelos’ power utility offering and strategy. Jeff began his career with ComEd, an Exelon company, in 1993 at the Braidwood Nuclear Station, progressing through roles of increasing responsibility in Project Management, Business Process Management, Resource Management, and Strategic Planning.
Jeff retired from ComEd in 2024 as Sr. Manager of Strategic Planning in the Grid Analytics department. Jeff holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering and an MS in Radiation Protection from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a Master’s in Management of Information Systems from Benedictine University.

His current work focuses on delivering ML/AI Computer Vision solutions to automate Asset Inspection & Management using UAS. He is a technology leader with over 20 years of experience working with startups and high-tech corporations driving development of cutting-edge solutions for robotics and artificial intelligence systems.
Prior to Deloitte Boris worked at Amazon leading Data Science teams at Amazon Robotics, Amazon Alexa and AWS where he led the US East team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers to help AWS clients accelerate adoption of machine learning and AI in products and processes. Boris has a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Columbia University and an MBA from Babson University F.W. Olin School of Business.
